Certified and licensed athletic trainer. Secondary-level exercise science teacher. The person who got tired of watching good students bounce off bad diagrams.
Kaitlyn Lanier, LAT, ATC is a certified and licensed athletic trainer in the state of Texas. She teaches exercise science at the secondary school level and was inspired to create this book by the challenge of communicating complex sports medicine concepts to young students.
With experience in both education and athletic training, the author brings together a unique perspective that connects classroom learning with real-world applications in sports and healthcare. The hope is that you find this content accessible, engaging, and fun.
Why a coloring book
The idea did not start as a book. It started as a workaround. Explaining the rotator cuff to a room of fifteen-year-olds using a textbook illustration meant watching four muscles collapse into a single gray blur on the page, and then answering the same question four different ways.
Handing out colored pencils changed the room. A student who has to choose where the supraspinatus ends and the infraspinatus begins has to actually look — and once they have drawn the border themselves, they can find it again on a diagram they have never seen. The pages that worked in class became worksheets, and the worksheets became a book.
Two jobs, one perspective
Working as an athletic trainer and teaching in a classroom pull in different directions, and the overlap is where this material lives. The clinical side supplies the accuracy — these are the same distinctions that matter when you are evaluating an ankle on a field in August. The teaching side supplies the translation — knowing which sentence loses a room and which analogy survives until the exam.
Most sports medicine material is written for one audience or the other. The goal here is to hold both: correct enough for a student heading into an allied health program, clear enough for a middle schooler who just wants to know why their knee hurts.
The books
Two editions, one field
The full Sports Medicine Coloring Book is the complete 128-page course. The Student Edition covers the same anatomy at a middle- and high-school reading level. Both are paperback, both ship from the store.
